  1. Hi Laura, Surprised you didn’t examine the possibility that the D5 lead could have been a singleton, which would have been a very good opening lead. This would have made the South hand 4540 and the West hand 4315, with West holding CA and CJ. Presumably your logic was that West’s club holding and ~16 HCP would have been enough for an overcall.

      Great thought. Often when low cards are led people don’t consider the possibility of a singleton and often miss the possibility of giving partner a ruff!
      I would back that this wouldn’t be the case on the hand because as you mention, with a 5 card suit and their points they would have been able to overcall. Even with a poor suit quality, with so many points they would be likely to get in with 2C.
      I like the thinking.
